in view of our activities above, and our subsequent interventions on public interested issues, our attention has been drawn to a matter of great urgency and concern regarding the recent happening in the Marine time Sector and it's union congress and how the Lagos State government through the permanent secretary of the ministry of transportation wanted to imposed the loser of the just concluded election held on 20th June 2023 on the legitimately elected leadership of the union in which if the issue is not quickly addressed can lead to breach of public peace and anarchy in the sector.
It has come to our attention that the Permanent Secretary, despite being a supervisor in the election that produced the new leadership, has taken a move to set up a committee to impose leadership on maritime transport operators an action capable to undermines the democratic process and the will of the people.
The decision to impose leadership is highly divisive and has the potential to ignite a crisis that can result in breach of public peace and breakdown of law and order.
The maritime transport industry plays a significant role in the economic growth and stability of Lagos State and any disruption caused by the implementation of this plan will have far-reaching consequences for the livelihoods of countless individuals and the overall well-being of our dear Lagos state.
The desperation to impose leadership on truckers despite an on going court process in the Suit NO:ID/7478GCM/2023
Lagos State High court
Ikeja Division is an abuse of court process and contemptuous.
The Permanent Secretary setting up a committee and imposing losers in the election as the head shall create serious rivalry within the union as it tantamount to imposing an illegal ticket on truckers to generate illicit revenue to the officials of the Ministry.
The CHSR as a reputable human rights organization of a great repute with a track record on equity, fairness and justice hereby demand as follows:
* That the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwiolu should quickly as a matter of urgency intervenes in this matter and addresses the concerns raised by the maritime transport operators as It is essential that their voices are heard, and their rights are protected.
* We request the Governor immediate intervention to prevent any further escalation of tensions and to ensure that the democratic principles that guide our society are upheld.
* That the alleged Permanent Secretary's actions are reviewed and that the decision to impose leadership is reconsidered in light of the potential consequences it could have on the state.
* That the Lagos State government organize a constructive and inclusive dialogue, involving all stakeholders, in the Marine time Sector in order to finetune way forward in resolving the issue.
Thank in advance
