( NAN) 1980 set of Government Girls College Agege in Lagos State has organised a Prize Giving Day worth million of naira for the outstanding and best students in the school.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the prize which includes, laptops, Android phones, School bags and learning materials were given  to motivate and encourage the students for better performances.

Mrs Abosede Adelaja, the Former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Lagos State who is also member of the 1980 set in her remarks said the gesture was meant to improve the students performances.

According to her, we believe God has blessed us, and the best thing we can do is to give back to our foundation.

"If government is providing infrastructure, we should be able to provide materials that will enhance learning because most of these children are not ready to learn they need to be pushed and motivated before they can learn.

"That's why we signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the school to organise Prizes for the students for five years at least that will encourage others who are not willing to learn to perform better in their academics," she said.

Adelaja said that the 1980 set would continue to sponsors the prize for the next five year which was subjected to review and repackage for advancement.

According to her, the 1980 set is doing that to tell and show the students that the time will come whereby they will be in that position to do the same thing to the school.

Mr Bashir Adebowale, the Permanent Secretary, Tutor General Education District 1, said that the event has been interesting and quiet appreciating the efforts of the 1980 set of the school.

Adebowale who was represented by Mr Oluyemi Adeshina, Director School Administration of the district said that the set in particular has never forgotten the school by celebrating the best hands.

"This prize is to celebrate our best hands and not only that but also to challenge those who are not among the best because with the impressive outing today they too will want to perform better next year," he said

According to him, this is a wake up call and well appreciated flagship of school for the those who are not measured to the celebration should perform better.

Barr Adejaree Kembi, one of the Parents in his remarks said that the only motive behind the prize giving was motivations of the students.

According to him, success has many fathers and children iñ the early stage who don't have opportunity of being motivated may not go far academically.

"Especially in Agege where many parents don't know the benefit of of quality education.

"Government has invested so much in the government college Agege, the old students are just coming up to let the students aware that they need to take advantage of the enormous investment.

"As we can see that government college Agege is even better than many private schools around so this prize giving is to open the eyes of the students to the various opportunity around them and utilise it accordingly," he said.

Mrs Bolanle Alamu, the School Principal in her remarks, thanked the 1980 set for the kind gestures to the students.

Alamu said that the prize giving me ceremony was the second edition since she became the principal in 2020.

"When I came to the school in 2020 I met the performance of the students in West African School Certificate Education (WASCE) in 34 per cent.

"We were not too happy about that, because the school is one of the best in the state, so we adopted 15 strategies for us to have better performances WASCE our target was 100 per cent.

"So, one of the strategies was prize giving, a type of prize different from ordinary notebooks, where we will be able to celebrate the winners very well," she said.

The principal said she consulted the 1980 set of the school and they swang in to action and sponsored the programme.

According to her, in 2021 the programme really helped the students performances as many of them have improved in their various academic performances.

"So after that our WASCE results have increased to 75 per cent in the year 2022, with 350 students sitting for the exams.

"We know that after the prize giving day the interest of the students will be rekindled and arouse and it will motivate them for better academics performances," she added.

Alabi Temidayo one of the beneficiaries thanked the 1980 set for the sponsorship of that kind.

Temidayo said that those learning materials would go a long way in helping them to study harder for better performances in the next editions.

NAN reports that hundreds of the college best students benefitted in the prize giving day sponsored by the 1980 old students of the school.(NAN)
