Rotary Club of Agege distributes free mosquito nets to pregnant women, others

(NAN) The Rotary Club of Agege in Lagos on Sunday distributed 200 free mosquito nets to pregnant and nursing mothers with public health enlightenment to prevent malaria in the area.
Mr Biodun Bello, President of the club, in his remarks during the public health sensitisation, said that the project was part of the humanitarian services rendered by Rotary globally to communities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme held at the Primary Health Centre in Sango area of Agege.
“We have numbers of women to cater for here in Agege, that is what we do year-in-year-out in our little contributions to benefit the grassroots community.
“We rescue the needy and the less-privileged in the society in the area of health and others as numerous people have benefitted from the exercise in past years,” he said.
According to him, the club sensitises both pregnant and nursing mothers to ensure they follow normal health directions during and after pregnancy and educates them on family planning.
Dr Otakpor Uzoyjecaine, a Medical Doctor, who tutored the beneficiaries during the health talk, said that nursing mothers ought to know how to take care of themselves and their children.
Uzoyjecaine also a member of the club, said that the purpose of the programme was to sensitise the community women, both pregnant and nursing mothers to be conscious of their health.
“We are here to enlighten them on maternal health care before, during and after child birth.
“We came to sensitise and distribute free mosquito nets to serve as helping hands to the less-privileged and prevent malaria in the society,” the doctor said.
According to him, the club has been doing wonders globally as it focuses on six major areas of conflict resolution, maternal and child care, disease prevention, water sanitation and others.
The doctor added that the positive impacts of the programme had been felt in the society by reducing the rate of malaria as well as maternal and child complications.
Dr Elizabeth Fatuyi, the Medical Officer of Health, Primary Health Centre, Sango community in Agege, in her remarks thanked the club for their antecedent annually in curbing malaria among the women.
Fatuyi added that the exercise had gone a long way in helping the mothers to ensure proper sanitation during and after pregnancy.
“The impacts of the sensitisation and distribution of the treated mosquito nets and diapers to pregnant and nursing mothers will go a long way in preventing diseases among them.
“I am sure they will benefit so many things from the health talk and other materials given to them,” the health officer said.
Mrs Deborah Odea, one of the beneficiaries of the programme, thanked the club for the kind gesture saying she was surprised for being given free mosquito nets and diapers.
Odea said that she learnt a lot in the health talk and assured that the enlightenment would help prevent diseases in the community.
Another beneficiary, Mrs Ogunsakin Abiola, hailed Rotary’s annual project and thanked the club for the free mosquito nets.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
